I tend to agree with that, so here's my bit of unworthy attention to the matter ...

I've never met an SIer in person but did see one in an interview on CNBC. The TV personality was more reserved than the one displayed on SI. I've also sometimes noticed that sort of difference in the more personal "venue" of PMs and e-mails I've received from SIers. But I don't particularly see either persona as more real than the other nor either one as phony. I just think, as you indicated, that we're programmed to perform differently in various social situations. Rambi, for example, has described her seeming paradox of personalities in SI v. 3D, and I consider them both to be real.

That said, I think I'll upgrade my opinion from unworthy to two-cents-worth ... :)
