Carter came to an agreement with Iran to unfreeze funds, with financial claims settled in a tribunal at the Hague, but the hostage release date was designed to insure he would not get credit.

I suppose it's possible the Iranians involved would deny this, so great was their hatred of Carter. But I think Carter himself is a more credible source.
