Muhammed, learned about Christianity and the Bible by Christians during various caravan journeys. But he picks and chooses the parts he likes. After hearing about the life of Jesus he realized that the message could never bring in many followers because Jesus talked about peace and doing good even to those who take advantage of you.
Yes, Muslims believe that Jesus is a prophet of God, not the Son of God.
Excerpt from my reading.
""Islamic doctrine maintains that Islam's monotheism continues that of Judaism and Christianity. However, the Qur'an and Islamic traditions stress the distinctions between Islam and later forms of the two other monotheistic religions. According to Islamic belief, both Moses and Jesus, like others before them, were prophets commissioned by God to preach the essential and eternal message of Islam. The legal codes introduced by these two prophets, the Ten Commandments and the Christian Gospels, took different forms from the Qur'an, but according to Islamic understanding, at the same level of doctrine they are the same teaching.""
My question for everyone here is, "why are Christians in America so tolerant of Jews, yet seem to be intolerant of Muslims? Especially when Muslims recognize the divine nature of Jesus, yet Jews do not."
And this excerpt also.
""Although Muslims believe tyhat the original messages of Judaism and Christianity were given by God, they also believe that Jews and Christians eventually distorted them. The self-percieved mission of Islam, therefore, has been to restore what Muslims believe is the original monotheistic teaching and to supplant the older legal codes of the Hebrew and Christian traditions with a newer Islamic code of law that corresponds to the evolving conditions of human societies.""
This appears to me to say that Islam MUST be interpreted according to the period of time that applies to humanity. This also explains why God allowed for different interpretations of the Qur'an.
Example, from an Islamic point of view, killing Christians who were Crusading through their lands 800 years ago, was a desirable thing.
Yet today, when there are no longer Crusading Christians, some Muslims have failed to reinterpret the Qur'an as it applies to the circumstances of today. This is my diagreement with Muslims, I believe that 800 year old interpretations of the Qur'an are no longer valid.
