Great overview of Carter's foreign policies - I'd forgotten a lot of that. The images of the embassy captives, the failure of the rescue - those really negated his positive accomplishments. Arms reductions and Begin and Sadat shaking hands did not have nearly the impact on the American public as the images of failure and helplessness.

OT - the mention of "symbolism" made me dig out my old Doonesbury collection and the strips about Duane Delacourt, "Secretary of Symbolism." :-)
