GZ, I think the terrorists will refrain from any attacks until after the election unless Bush attacks Iraq before the election. My reasoning is as follows:

1. Without some patriotic incident, voters will be focused on the economy in November and that ain't good for the GOP. Not that the terrorists are Democrats, but they certainly would like to see a divided Congress. Thus they will lay low for a while so as not to cause a "rally around the flag" response.

2. However, the GOP also knows #1. Thus they will force the issue with Iraq in October so as to divert attention from the economy. This will likely provoke a terrorist response. Everyone rallies around the flag and the GOP gains strong control of Congress.

Now I don't like the direction Iraq is headed in. I thought we should have taken care of business in 1991 and obviously something must happen in the future. But I don't think waiting until 2003 will make a difference and it really irks me to see the GOP hurrying us into a war just so they can win a few extra seats in November. We should not kill and be killed just to gain votes in an election year.

War is not to be entered into lightly, but if entered we should enter with intention to win. The last Gulf War was a military victory that was then sacrificed at the conference table, so now we are faced with doing it again.....

Note that I also faulted Clinton for using military adventures to deflect attention from his follies. People die in military actions, it is criminal to kill people for political gain. It was wrong for Clinton to do it and it will be wrong if Bush chooses this path.

Yes, a new Iraq war will result in very few American casualities while many die in Iraq. Just like in 1991. But I grieve for the loss of life on both sides. Most of those Iraqi soldiers we killed at long range were innocent draftees and not there by choice. These were human beings with pictures of their family in their pockets. No less human than any one else.
