Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) and United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) have moved beyond the dating stage, freely sharing technology in the belief that it will boost their collective competitiveness. AMD today will disclose that it will help UMC integrate its advanced process control system into UMC's fabs, upping the ante against AMD's archrival Intel Corp. and UMC's top competitor Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC). The rest here: e-insite.net What I find interesting is that by transferring the cutting edge technology to UMC, the process of trickling down this wealth will quicken, and others, who are UMC customers (but not AMD competitors) will benefit. But those who are UMC customers but not AMD competitors may be Intel's competitors. Anyway, just an idea. I wonder if AMD has some clause that UMC is not allowed to fab chips for Via or Transmeta using technology obtained from AMD. Joe
