"AMD K8-core Opteron shows up in China"

digitimes.com

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) displayed samples of K8-core processors at the recent CeBIT Shanghai exhibition. It reportedly unveiled server-use SledgeHammer and workstation-use ClawHammer processors.

The processors, part of the Opteron-brand family, will not officially hit the market until January or sometime later in 2003. K8 Athlon-brand desktop versions should be released in the fourth quarter of 2002, according to AMD’s roadmap.

However, probably due to low initial output, the K8 desktop processors will be shipped first to brand-name PC makers in China, instead of clone vendors, sources revealed.

Major chipset designers like VIA Technologies, Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) and ALi Corporation (Acer Laboratories) have already finished developing supporting chipsets. However, judging from the present progress, VIA, the biggest AMD chipset supplier, said that the 64-bit K8 processors are not likely to replace 32-bit K7 processors in the market mainstream before the third quarter of 2003.
