Yes. But there are some hitches. The confirmation when the ADX crosses one of the directional indicators is always very lagging and if you wait for it you can miss the better part of the run. It is very useful for those of us who hold for a long time (about a year and a half so far for me) to buoy their spirits when patience runs thin after long consolidation periods.<GG>

Since I've been a goldbug of sorts during the last two bear rallies around 87 and mid nineties as well as the last part of the 70's bull, my strategy was always to get out at appropriate times. No weeping bull in a bear market if I can help it, I've just always understood the leverage in this small market. I came to SI in 00 to learn to trade the markets in general, but you take what you are given and try and keep your mind open. Just used chart patterns and MA crosses then of course. The whole trick to the ADX is to watch for the turns in the DI's and use the rule of above / below 20 to watch the MACD or Stochastics for the actual buy or sell signals.

In those charts you posted the confirmation is there, but if you look around the end of July, first of August the ADX was above 20 (barely) and the MACD gave the last signal which was to buy. Previously it had given a sell signal just after June 4. With the ADX now below 20, we should look to Stochastics for other signals and if you change the lower indicator from MACD to Fast Stochastics it looks like it's overbought, but even then turning up so stick with the last signal and the confirmation from the ADX cross of the -DI. How come your charts don't come with the buttons to change indicators?
