Coastal residents brace for Gustav

CAPE HATTERAS, North Carolina (AP) --
Waves 8 to 10 feet high pounded North Carolina beaches Monday as Subtropical Storm Gustav whipped the Outer Banks, threatening coastal flooding and erosion.

At 11 p.m. EDT Monday, the National Hurricane Center reported that Gustav was centered near latitude 32.5 north, longitude 75.9 west, or about 200 miles south of Cape Hatteras. It packed winds of nearly 50 mph.
