I suppose Sontag probably ranks somewhere in Chomsky territory among the war advocates, but I thought that essay was quite clear headed and on point. I wonder if Sontag got to see Safire's column invoking Lincoln and the Gettysburg address in the war marketing effort from yesterday before hers went in (http://www.nytimes.com/2002/09/09/opinion/09SAFI.html ) . Presumably not. Safire's column was actually relatively restrained for him, I imagine we'll see much worse in days to come.
