I am curious as to why you say that "history has demonstrated" that Truman was probably wrong to think that dropping the A-bombs saved American lives. When you look at the casualty stats for Okinawa, which had a smaller population than the main island of Japan, it seems to me that you would have to come up with some pretty strong evidence in order to show that the conventional invasion that was planned would not have killed far more of both Americans and Japanese.
