It is true enough that it went astray, but even Marx was contemptuous of "bourgeois democracy" and civil liberties, at least until the revolutionary period was over, however long that would be......

But didn't the Soviets replace the bourgeois and the Tsars with a new kind of noble.......the oligarchs? And I am not sure it went astray so much as it was led in a specific direction.

Marx's theories will be ever tarnished by the kind of country the USSR became and the gov't it presented to the world.
