Perspective would also help us keep our heads when handing over precious freedoms to the government, in order to purchase our "safety". If we see this event as larger than it is, we are likely to do things in response to it that are foolish (imo).

But people will see things that way they wish to. And if the general will is to see this as a watershed event, it will be a watershed event. That is the way of things. Perception is often the reality. I think it would be healthier to perceive this as a terrible and RARE thing that has happened on American soil. And as I said, the best defense is to go on, and show our enemies we are the same. Being reactive or convulsed with grief does not strike me as the best face to put on for your enemy. From their point of view, I am sure the huge attention paid to 9/11 is very satisfying. I would not wish to give them any satisfaction. Some people on SI often talk about aid and comfort to the enemy. What aids and comforts them is knowledge that they got to us. Knowledge that some people are obsessed with 9/11. This is real aid and comfort to them, imo. In the PR wars, I think the nastiest thing we could do to our enemies is show them we are stoics, and they cannot kill us or terrify us into being a lesser kind of society.
