That makes good sense. A related point is that many of us could choose Christmas gifts for many people on SI better than many of their closest associates, friends, and families. Even spouses are notoriously prone to choosing gifts which show a dimmed comprehension of the true feelings and thoughts of their better half. Here on SI however, people share so much of their essential values, likes, and dislikes, that choosing a wonderful gift might be fairly easily accomplished.

Of course, if the gift was given insincerely, then the fact that it was something the receiver might otherwise have treasured would not necessarily cause them to appreciate it under the cirscumstances. The point is simply that people share a lot of their true character here...without the plethora of censoring that accompanies so much of face-to-face interaction.
