It seems to me that, no matter how ubiquitous 802.11 becomes in urban areas, mobility will always have a fundamental role to play in wireless. If one looks at the actual area covered by any of our "nationwide" networks, its only a fraction of the total land space. Just how nationally ubiquitous can 802.11 be if it requires a tower every 30 or 40 yards or so? Some streets in NYC are wider than that. So are most 8 or higher lane interstates running in and out of major cities. What happens if you're in the center lane? Are you just SOL?
