Check out the BW article this week on MCI (either print or on-line)
and they mention that one of the big troubles MCI has is no cellular
service--first thing I thought of was that ATI would be a good fit
for them since ATI is the possibly the best "pure" cell play. Other
than as a takeover candidate, though, ATI faces tough competition in
its home market of California, still its main source of revenues, and
the competition is going to be especially tough from its former Ma--PAC--which is going great guns with its new PCS system; sales and
marketing have been terrific for PAC's PCS so far and with SBC behind
them now, they'll be very aggressive. ATI has a very high p/e and no
dividends--everything's going to grow the business--IMO better buys
elsewhere. I used to own ATI and sold it for 27 about 2 years ago--its been a lousy investment so far. On a buyout, though, maybe
you're looking at 55 a share--very speculative reason to buy this one
though.
