Reminds me of Thomas Kuhn's "paradigm shift" in science. In my classes I talk about religious development (the development of religious doctrines over time) as organic in nature; like a garden of ideas weeded and nurtured by theologians and the magisterium; nothing is ever wholly lost, but dies only to reappear in another form. Not exactly the same sort of thing you are talking about. In science, old ideas are discarded. In religion, old ideas are reinterpreted.
