Northwest Plane Diverted Due to Unruly Passengers

Sept. 11

- FORT SMITH, Arkansas (Reuters) - A day after the United States went on a heightened security
alert, a Northwest Airlines plane was diverted on Wednesday to a regional airport in Arkansas after
four unruly passengers locked themselves in an airplane bathroom, the airline said.

An Arkansas official, who asked not to be named, said the event did not appear to be terrorism related.
The official said other passengers became concerned when the four performed what appeared to be
"a cleansing ritual" aboard the plane.

All the other passengers departed safely from Northwest Flight 979 that was en route from Memphis to
Las Vegas.

"Four detainees from the aircraft are in custody at state police headquarters in Fort Smith and are being
questioned by federal authorities," said Arkansas State Police spokesman Bill Sadler.

Northwest said in a statement the crew elected to divert to Fort Smith as a precautionary measure after
the crew was unable to satisfactorily resolve the situation in-flight. The flight landed safely at Fort Smith
Regional Airport at 10:55 a.m. EDT.

As an additional precautionary measure, all passengers and baggage were removed from the plane in
Fort Smith. Passengers will depart for Las Vegas once a new security screening has been performed.
There were 94 passengers and a crew of five on the Airbus A320.

Citing information earlier this week that American interests abroad were at high risk of terrorist attack,
senior U.S. officials on Tuesday announced the first increase in the nationwide threat level and told
citizens to be on alert for a new attack.

On the eve of the first anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States, Attorney General John
Ashcroft announced a change in the color-coded threat level to "orange," the second highest level,
reflecting a "high risk of terrorist attacks."
