The two things are not incompatible. If she were a parents dream, say, graduating Harvard medical with a summa cum laude, you can bet that her parents would take at least some credit for how she turned out, while patting her on the back for doing the heavy lifting. So it is in reverse, it is hard for parents to escape some criticism, if only that they were too "absentee", if their kids get into scrapes, even if the kids must take the brunt of the responsibility.
