AUSTIN, Texas -- The third and fourth quarters of 2002 will see strong year-on-year rises in shipments and revenues of small- and medium-sized flat panel displays, according to DisplaySearch, a market research and consulting firm.

The reason is the switch to color screens in mobile phone handsets although other segments such as personal digital assistants (PDAs) and automotive displays are also strong, the company said.

Looking to the immediate past small- and medium-sized flat panel display shipments increased to 114.4 million units in the second quarter of 2002, up 20.3% over the same quarter a year earlier, Amidst some price erosion the corresponding revenues increased by 15.1% to $1.4 billion, the company said.

The market is even stronger looking forward. DisplaySearch forecasts that growth will continue through the remainder of the year with total units up against the same period a year previous 22% and 8% in the third and fourth quarters respectively. Revenues are expected to grow even faster; up 32% and 38% year-on-year in the same respective quarters. The anticipated growth is a function of the recovery in the mobile phone market and a shift from monochrome to color displays, the company said.
