Mazda To Speed Car Development With New Computer System
Wednesday, September 4, 2002
TOKYO (Nikkei)--Mazda Motor Corp. (7261) has introduced a powerful computer system for faster modeling of newly designed cars and analysis of such factors as the flow of air and fuel inside engine cylinders.

The system lets the firm run simulations 10 times faster than before. This is achieved by dynamically creating virtual partitions and allocating processing resources according to the volumes of data that must be analyzed. Computational tasks can take anywhere from several hours to several days, depending on the algorithms involved and the amount of data being processed. The flexible partitioning enables numerous designers to make efficient use of the system.

In the auto industry, it typically takes 14 months or longer to take a new car from the design stage to mass production. Mazda intends to use the computer system to shorten the development timetable with the goal of developing new cars in as little as 12 months.

The company went to SGI Japan Ltd. for the hardware: an SGI Origin 3800 high-performance Unix server with 56 microprocessors and a storage system with 1.7 terabytes of data storage space. For software, Mazda worked with CD-adapco Japan. The entire setup cost around 300 million yen.
