nnillionaire, I can answer my own WEP question now after trial and error.

I powered the notebook pc down.
I established WEP at 192.168.1.1 from the desktop pc

I booted the notebook pc and displayed the instant wireless config utility 'encryption' tab. I chose 128 bit encryption and [without entering anything else] hit 'apply changes', then closed the utility. It works fine.
