Off the coast of New Jersey, the Coast Guard ordered the freighter Palermo Senator out to sea after detecting traces of radiation in cargo containers.

Coast Guard officers boarded the ship, sailing to Port Elizabeth N.J., from Valencia, Spain, at 2:30 a.m. in search of stowaways.

The officers detected faint signs of radiation among the 655 cargo containers on the 700-foot ship. Investigators from several federal agencies spent much of the day trying to determine the source of the radiation. Sandra Carroll, an FBI spokeswoman, said the investigation could take several days.
