OK. So, your main objection is to altered psychological states... whether altered 'up', or altered 'down', or altered towards sensations of pleasure.

By that criteria, alcohol would appear to be a significant candidate for social disapproval... and especially because:

1) a significant percentage of users become the kind known as 'mean drunks' (ask any cop which they would be most wary of busting: a party of drunks, or a party of pot heads....)

2) the physical impairment begins with the first drink. Any quantity of alcohol degrades motor skills and judgement and makes operating equipment more dangerous, there is no 'safe' amount.
