1) Nobody says they have to abandon the PPC. In fact building x86 Mac boxes could just be another business like the iPod is another business. They could probably sell 100,000 high powered, off the shelf Athlon boxes

why would they want to build machines that are slower than what they are building now? yet cost more? and produce more energy drains?

you are trying to build a mcDonalds across the street from another mcDonalds..... worse you are trying to charge more for kludgy burgers that takes twice the energy to cook then sell them to McDonald's customers who are know what the "real thing" is......

the PPC's are faster than Pentiums/Athlon's at the same price points at the critical applications where they need to be faster.....

if you are just doing word processing, an iMac, or a Dell Dude $799 wintel is good enough..... but if you want to do pro apps like photoshop, there is no faster desktop or laptop than G4 powered machines.... that has been proven out in many many tests.....

better yet, you should do the test yourself using a program that counts, like photoshop or some other pro application that is hungry for speed, and figure out why you are so far off.......

macnightowl.com
macnightowl.com
cpuscorecard.com (note this site's reference to single processors and altivec)

other reviews like from Barefeats are littered with notes saying they didn't use multi processor aware tests and didn't use altivec......

any application hungry for speed that is made for the mac that is worth it's salt, is designed to use multi processors and altivec...
