You might want to have a look at a unique Linux distribution, Knoppix. It is 2 MByte of Linux software compressed on one CD. You can download the ISO CD image free of charge, burn the CD, insert it in your CD drive, reboot, wait for two minutes - and you have a fully configured KDE desktop with 900 program packages, incl. OpenOffice, a full MS Office substitute (can read and write in Office format), Mozilla, the standard-compliant browser beating Internet Explorer in compatibility tests, modem/DSL dial-up capability, CD burning, MP3 audio listening, DVD/AVI video viewing and many other applications. Nothing on the local hard disk(s) is changed, though existing volumes are recognized and mounted read-only. All configuration changes are saved on a floppy so you have a truly portable Linux system.
