Yes this is quite puzzling isn't it. I would assume that Lucent looked at the various VM's prior to the refferal aggreeement with CGRM. Of course they knew that they were planning to buy Octel when they made the announcement. It does leave you wondering.

My guess is that Lucent decided that Sierra was not up to the task of cellular messaging (a strength of CGRM's fault-tolerant Series 6). Octel does have a very good Enterprise CPE product line (Overture), and that is their principle strength right now. They have been killing every body in this high margin CPE sector.

Just my guess is that Lucent will use CGRM until either IMA (or some other new Octel SP platform is shipping), and then give CGRM the boot. What Octel gets is lots of money and telephony expertise to use in developing new SP. I suspect that Octel employee moral just got a boost as well. The next few months will be very interesting for VM!!
