Gus,

The U.S. resistance to the Georgian discipline by Pooty-Pooty is based on this newly signed agreement:

Observations.
1 Division among the ‘elites,’ as they are often called, is rooted in their diverging interests.
a Summary.

i CCR interprets the current infighting over how to proceed in Iraq as a reflection of the diverging interests of the current U.S. leadership. While it is impossible to know for sure why the Baker et al crowd is opposed to the Pentagon’s war plans, there exists some significant clues that might indicate what is behind their sudden change of heart.

On August 1, the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan Pipeline Company (BTC Co.) was founded to construct and operate the long awaited pipeline that will bring oil from the Caspian oil fields of Azerbaijan to the Mediterranean Sea. The BTC pipeline route, the viability of which as been repeatedly challenged by both ExxonMobil and ChevronTexaco, was strongly endorsed and lobbied for by the U.S.-Azerbaijan Chamber of Commerce (USACC) [profile]. Several of the most prominent “anti-war” voices happen to be on its board of directors, including James Baker III, Zbigniew Brzezinski, Henry Kissinger, and Brent Scowcroft. It is not far-fetched or unreasonable to suggest that their recent protestations against the Pentagon’s war plans may have something to do with their interests in maintaining stability in Turkey, Georgia, and Azerbaijan.

As most readers of this site would agree, the ‘war on terrorism’ is being used as a pretext to achieve objectives other than ending terrorism. What’s interesting is that the current U.S. leadership is at odds over how exactly the war on terrorism should be conducted and what its most important goals should be. The Pentagon, which is closely tied to Israel, has one opinion on how to ‘use’ the ‘war on terrorism,’ while the Baker et al crowd apparently has a different view on what the strategy and goals should be. It seems very likely, judging from the content of the latter’s dissenting publications, that Baker, Kissinger, Brzezinski, and Scowcroft fear that the Pentagon’s absolute disregard for the opinion of U.S. citizens and allies runs the risk of ruining the ‘opportunity’ that the ‘war on terrorism’ has presented to those in power. Furthermore, they may fear that a war under the DoD’s leadership will create too much instability in the region where they are trying to do business. Additionally, the Pentagon’s ambitions in Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and other Middle Eastern states could end up diverting too large a portion of the country’s resources away from other operations that the Baker gang would like to see succeed, for instance, the pacification of the Pankisi Gorge in Georgia where the BTC pipeline will pass. While no conclusive proof yet exists to verify this hypothesis, it seems very probable that this is indeed what is really fuelling the so-called ‘dissent’ that is currently being so widely discussed in the mainstream.

The BTC Co. simply doesn't want competition from Yukos. They hired the Bushista junta to muscle Putin.
