Reserve officers to quit if commander not suspended

MARGOT DUDKEVITCH
Sep. 12, 2002

A group of reserve officers in an engineering unit have threatened to quit their positions if their battalion commander, who has been charged with abusing a Palestinian youth, is not suspended from the IDF.

In a letter sent to the Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Moshe Ya'alon two days ago, the reservists stated that their reasons stemmed from the failure of OC Judea Brig.-Gen Amos Ben-Avraham to suspend Lt.-Col. Geva Saguy or dismiss him temporarily until the outcome of the trial.

Saguy was indicted in July in Tel Aviv Military Court, charged with abusing a Palestinian youth during Operation Defensive Shield.

According to the charge sheet, Saguy and others went to search the Bethlehem home of a Palestinian suspected of possessing weapons. On finding that the suspect was not at home, Saguy tried to compel his teenage son to reveal the location of the weapons and ordered him to strip. He held a piece of burning paper close to his groin and attempted to force him to sit on a bottle so that the top would penetrate the his anus.

Saguy is also charged in a separate incident of allegedly using a woman, a Senegalese housekeeper, as a "human shield" while troops searched a home for terrorists.

Prior to sending a letter to Ya'alon, the reservists asked Ben-Avraham to suspend Saguy, stating they are unable to serve under the command of someone who was charged with such serious allegations and against whom they will be called to testify.

Ben-Avraham reportedly told them the trial is still in process and Saguy had not yet been found guilty.

Meanwhile, the reservists were notified that they would not be called up for reserve duty in November and learned that "replacements" had been called up instead.

One of the officers told Israel Radio they found themselves in a difficult position as they testified against Saguy during the Military Police investigation and will be expected to testify before the court.

"Such a situation makes it impossible for us to serve under his command," he said.
