Re: Why would AMD delay Hammer as a reaction to improved clock speed of Tbred?

Perhaps it wasn't a reaction to improved clock speed in Tbred but the immediate and critical need to improve clock speed in Tbred when Intel pulled in Northwood's roadmap by about 400mhz.

A 2200+ against Northwood 2400 is just fine, but a 2200+ against Northwood 2800 isn't. Intel's resources usually limit the introduction of major new steppings to about 1 per quarter - and AMD has a lot less to work with. I don't think there is any way AMD's FAB production teams and V&V (validation and verification) teams could ramp Thoroughbred with an additional metal layer at they same time they ramp Hammer on SOI. And there are enough risks associated with Hammer on SOI that they felt they couldn't risk having nothing else going - so they've decided to work hard on the "sure thing" of improving Tbred for the remainder of this year to insure they have something competitive against Northwood.

It may be bad for AMD, but, speaking as someone who has put in a whole lot of new Socket A systems in the past two months, I can at least find some good news in it. Compared to buying Hammer systems using a new chipset, an Athlon MP 2600+ or 3000+ that is a drop in for the MPX, KT333, and NVidia nForce chipsets would allow for a bunch of cheap and easy upgrades...
