OT re: slavery Founding Fathers obviously condoned slavery Condoned may be too weak a word. The original Constitution actually enshrined slavery. Article I, Section 9 forbade Congress to forbid the slave trade. Article IV, Section 2 required citizens of the "free" states to return any runaway slave to "the Party to whom such Service or Labour may be due," even if slavery itself was unlawful within the state to which the runaway had managed to escape. Also, Article I, Section 2 counted only "three fifths of all other Persons" (slaves) in determining a state's allotment of seats in the House of Representatives.
