Gene and others: I'm late to the party on this thread and have meant to "catch up" and to my regret haven't done so until now. Anyway, several weeks back there was much discussion on where in the analogy with the thirties were we now, '31 or '32? FWIW I don't know if many here were trading the market in 1987 or not but at that time there also existed a very strong correlation with the late '20's. In a interview with Paul Tudor Jones in Barrons he discussed the similarities with charts, etc. Also there was considerable discussion on the Street about the identical charts of the two periods, '29 and '87. This comparison was made so often (after October 19th) that one of big traders at that time, Bob Wilson, made the remark that the one thing he was sure of was that it wouldn't happen, because it was so closely followed. I don't believe that discussion is as prevalent today (believe me Jones is aware of it) but the only way to find out how it will go is to let the market tell you via divergence from the pattern much as Jeff has indicated vis a vis the US or Japan. In 1987 it took about four or five months after October 19th before it broke away. So far it hasn't happened here and until it does you have to play it. BTW thanks Jeff and everyone else for sharing their insights.
