My son was invited to be in something they call "The Little Partner's Rodeo" which takes place in our city. At the time he had not yet learned to compensate for his severe communication disability. Children with all kinds of disabilities were invited to participate. The cowboys from the rodeo volunteered their time to work with our kids.

All the people involved were full of such decency, as are the people associated with the Special Olympics. There are certainly questions one can discuss regarding such events. For example, do they showcase the deficits of people with handicaps rather than exhibiting their areas of competency? Do such events make us feel pity rather than honest compassion and joy? Are these events ever making money off the children they are supposed to be serving? These are good questions. They are all worth discussing, if discussed sensitively. But I do think most parents of a child with a disability, or the many people who work with such children, would find that poster very offensive. Substitute the word "black" for "retarded" and think about what you would think of a person who had such a poster.

(I'm agreeing with you, and just expanding on what you said- not meaning the "you" to be you, Neocon - whoever THAT is :-)
