“God comforts us in order to make us comforters.” Anonymous The God of All Comfort Isaiah 51:12-13
It has been reported that three-quarters of all adults believe the Bible teaches that God helps those who help themselves. This is a tragic error. This is actually a statement born in Greek mythology and attributed to the mythical Hercules. God’s Word, in fact, teaches the exact opposite.
The Bible testifies that people cannot help themselves. (Romans 3:23) teaches that all have sinned and therefore fall short of God’s standard. Because we are in such dire straits, God Himself acts on our behalf to rescue us from our trouble. (Psalm 46:1) reminds us that “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
Similarly, (Psalm 18:2) proclaims, “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” These are powerful descriptions, and this is how the Lord desires us to see Him.
A serious problem among Christians is the often unexpressed notion that God is not enough to meet our needs. We may trust Him for our salvation, but not for our day-to-day needs. What an irony!
How can we place our assurance in our salvation from sin and death, and yet deny His power for our more mundane problems? We can trust Him with all of our needs because God is enough.
Plant your feet on the Rock today. With such a strong foundation, you will find the power to stand up to anything. (Psalm 62:2)
