InfoSpace and PA to offer SMS weather service

London, September 13 2002, (netimperative)

by Chris Lake

PA WeatherCentre has teamed up with wireless and internet software developer InfoSpace to provide a new SMS weather service.

The company, a joint venture between The Press Association and independent weather group MeteoConsult, will make use of InfoSpace's connectivity agreements with the four major UK mobile operators, to offer SMS weather forecasts for 25p-a-message to as many as 45m mobile subscribers.

Users of the service can request up-to-the-minute information, as well as short, medium and long-term forecasts. Messages will contain data on minimum and maximum temperature, wind speed, hours of sunshine and the chances of a downpour.

The service will also be offered as a white-label product to businesses, websites and print publishers, allowing them to re-brand it according to their own corporate guidelines and giving them the chance to earn a share of the revenues.
