Metals that are conductive will respond to a moving magnet from the eddy current effect. Pt is slightly magnetic when rich in iron, (native state). This is common in nuggets. delostooleauthor.com The Merensky reef is a uniform geological formation in SA which is about one foot thick and extends for scores of miles, and has a uniform platinum content of about 1/2 ounce per ton. Similar ring formations which may exist surrounding Sudbury, Ontario, and Thompson Manitoba have never been searched for. Platinum is a relatively common metal in the earth's crust, found commonly in association with copper and nickel in mafic intrusive and coarse flow rocks known as gabbros and dunites. These rocks are found in every volcanic region of Canada. Due to the overwhelming dominance of International Nickel and Falconbridge in the nickel and platinum market in North America, there has been little incentive to explore for primary platinum deposits and North American Palladium near Thunder Bay remains the only primary platinum mine on this continent outside the Stillwater complex in Montana. Inco's Shebandowan, west of Thunder Bay, although not profitable at all without its Platinum content is considered due to Inco's nickel first philosophy as a nickel mine that produces platinum. Inco and Falconbridge both steadfastly refuse to produce from a property which only harvest platinum metals and not primarily nickel! Both companies had never done a platinum assay underground in all their history up until 1985! It was treated strictly as a by product, and despite many educated opinions of many consultants that primary deposits existed of good grade in the area, Inco and Falconbridge have refused to explore for these metals.
