We also contribute to the Special Olympics. Our daughter is too profoundly retarded to participate, but we understand the loveliness of the project.

The fact is, parents of mentally retarded children simply do feel free to laugh at certainly poignantly comic, or even darkly comic, moments or situations than 'outsiders' tend to. We don't have to prove anything.

I don't know whether you can understand this--though I thought I had an old memory that you have a retarded family member. If so, then you know exactly what I mean.

But Neocon, I can't tell you how genuinely touched I am at the scruple that made you post that message to me, and at your sensitivity in behalf of both mentally retarded people and those who love them. Thanks for that very sweet post, whether it was made as the relative of a retarded person or as a compassionate outsider.
