The whole flavour of what Chretien said is that the west is too rich, especially the US, and wouldn't you expect events like 9/11 to occur just because of that. As he is a socialist like many Canadians, he wants to redistribute wealth from the rich to the poor and it is why many Canadians, even now, support Chretien and the Liberals.
This thinking is endemic in Canadian society. Judges and the courts system give trivial sentences to thieves who are mainly stealing from the richer to give to themselves the poorer. They've just arrested some 21 year old for car theft in Surrey, BC, which is the car theft capital of the world apparently. He has 17 prior convictions. Surely after say 5 convictions he should be in the clink for 5 years. After 10 convictions, give him 10 years.
Among the reasons for poverty in third world is they ignore 50% of their population, women, by not letting them be educated and occupy positions of power.
Why is Japan wealthy and Indonesia poor. Hard work and brain power being used.
Why are African countries rejecting GM corn for their starving masses when the western world eats and uses GM corn. They are not using their brains.
To finish with Chretien, the man is a linguistic dummy, he used about 5 "you knows" in that short extract with Mansbridge. Where is the parody of that beer commercial "I am a Canadian". It should read "My name is Joe and I am a Canadian ashamed of my Prime Minister Jean Chretien."

BTW he is not a Premier he is a Prime Minister, only the Provinces have Premiers.
