Dear Petz:

That is not what they did. They added additional decoupling capacitors within the chip itself to reduce switching noise and improve S/N ratios. They changed the design rules to spread things out some more to prevent cross talk, etc. This takes extra die area, but improved speeds so much that the loss in die per wafer was more than made up for in speeds and ASAP for a wafer went up.

Hammer and Barton did not see this makeover because they wanted to try it on Tbred. It worked out so well that to not spread the changes to the rest of their CPU family was thought to be worth the three month delay. I would have appreciated them saying so (corporate secrecy is too high under Ruiz).
