I had also heard that the car could have carried fertilizer (ammonium nitrate), at some point in time, but my gut instinct tells that there's more to this story. I don't know if you heard the exact words that the woman told the police she heard. But the gist of it was that they were on the way to Miami to get something, and if it wasn't enough, one of them had connections to get more. Heck, they could have been dope smugglers, for all we know?
