We heard lots of "deal with the root causes of terrorism" after 911. Suggest doing so, and there are suddenly lots of "buts".

I am playing with an idea that is ill-formulated (insights appreciated.)

The collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War did not make idiological Marxists disappear.

It seems to me that Marxists were the most vocal critics of the US interfering with the internal affairs of other countries. Why? Because when we did, it was almost always to thwart Marxism.

The criticism almost universally took two tacks -- we were criticised because (they said) the groups we supported were anti-human rights, and we were criticised because (they said) the groups we supported would line the pockets of those in power. Exactly the same criticisms we hear today.

Would it be fair to say that many on the left remain sympathetic to the goals of Marxism?
