The lead story in this month's "New Yorker" is "The Man Behind bin Laden, How Ayman al-Zawahiri, an Egyptian doctor, became Al Qaeda's guiding force." by Lawrence Wright. It details the rise of the "Islamists" from the "1930's" Egypt though the killing of Sadat to the present. Not available on line, but a "Must Read," IMO.

I look forward to reading it. Last week's copy of The New Yorker missed our mailbox, the one with Nicholas Leeman's nice piece. So I hope this week's makes it.

My point about Islamists is a bit different. Keppel makes the point, several times, that some folk who get thrown into this catchall favor democratic means but get lumped with everyone else because they have no notion of separation of the state from religion. In this sense, they seem to me to be more like the fundamentalist Christian right wing in this country which also lacks that sense.
