Canadian satellite telephone service costs have dropped significantly following a majortprice reduction by Mississauga-based Globalstar Canada. Globalstar is a leading satellite telephone service provider. Four new price plans are now available from Globalstar Canada, with high-use packages priced as low as 32 cents per minute. The recommended list price for handsets dropped by one-third to $995.
More than 80 per cent of the world's land surface and essentially all ocean regions remain outside the range of cellular telephone networks. Until recently, the only reliable alternative for these remote areas -- satellite telephones -- have been financially prohibitive for many applications.
"Our Canadian customers continually tell us how much they love the clarity, reliability and capability of making calls from areas where cellular or traditional telephone service is unavailable, and we are delighted to pass along new pricing that is up to 75 per cent lower," said Peter White, general manager of Globalstar Canada.
"This aggressive pricing will attract a vast, new array of potential customers who are interested in our services, but are looking for more affordable and flexible pricing. We've already had tremendous success in Canada, servicing more than 4,500 companies and organizations since our launch two-and-a-half years ago, and have achieved very strong market penetration in every single vertical market."
The announcement stems in part from Globalstar LP's recent acquisition of gateway and marketing operations in the United States from Vodafone Americas Inc. and the acquisition of an equity stake in Globalstar Canada's sales and gateway operations last year.
"The consolidation of Canadian and US Globalstar operations is an important first step in implementing our new business plan," said White. "These new operational efficiencies, combined with Globalstar's large system capacity advantage, allow us to pass along these substantial savings to our customers." |
