One thing experience has taught me, from forays into social service as well as personal experiences that involved enormous losses, is how terribly important it is to physically touch people who are suffering.

A pat on the shoulder, a touch of a hand, or a hug, often do far more than a meal, a cot, or a handout. The tactile reassurance reminds the recipient that they are not untouchable and alone. It also reminds the giver of the same.

It is worst to be hungry with the heart than with the stomach. (Mother Teresa of Calcutta)

"The worst disease in today's world is not leprosy or cancer: it is the feeling of being uncared for, unwanted, of being deserted and alone" (Mother Teresa, again)
