SI has:

1. non threaded posting.

2. Private mailbox inbox alert

3. spell checking preview

4. searching for names, text and titles.

5. private messaging.

6. database of recent posts of members.

7.fully tunnelable message base

8. go to numbered messages

9, permanent message URL

10. lots of members.

11. lots of stocks and topics.

12. free topic generation.

13. fast page loading - simple interface

14. reliable site ... in general

15 associated stock data

16. personal profiles

17. portfolios

18. personal subject list.

19. new message indicator and hit list of messages.

20. fixed text feature.

Drawbacks are:

1. snarky intrusive admin people get into petty fights and censure of customers.

2. related data is not at fingertips i.e. quotes,
news, charts, dun and bradstreet is not a "natural offshoot" of thread which is stock related.

3. free form nature of topics does not allow lists to be built. Lists that are well organized except in the SI heirarchy way do not exist. Aging of main lists of topics or threads tends to bury some topics that might otherwise be browsed by snoopers. Customized list sorting except in the personal subject way is not done.

4. hit rate of messages cannot be seen.

5. Not enough HTML codes allowed.

as well as some formatting and font things. Colour is cheap, gaudy but cheap. Full Urls should be allowed in order to allow text links instead of the URL itself.

6. members should have a simple toolhouse for
building small simple personal webpages. I can write this thing for people who know no HTML whatsoever,
with pre fab containers for gifs, tables, lists
and links of all kinds. Even forms.

7. Posting should include email gateway feature
for those who want notices of replies.

8. all replies on a thread of a poster should be isolatable.

9. constant reply threads should be isolatable for topic following. i.e. threads could be turned on or off.

10. hunting down and assasinating SI posters is disallowed by law. This is both an advantage and a disadvantage.
