Short version is this: Group of French colonized an area called Acadia which is now called Nova Scotia in the early 1600's. Things didn't go well, the British harassed them then in the 1700's, the French sold them out to the British and they're land was taken, they were taxed into poverty and kicked out of the country because they wouldn't give up being Catholics.

Up side of all this is Cajuns flourished in America and brought some great food to the country to boot!
