In Rog (it's a huge terrain, 50 km across, where you can still get totally lost in the middle of Europe) is a place where you can still see - in some places, due to wisdom of the German owner back at the start of the 1900s - the forest, the way it would be without the human drive to improve on it.

i have a book (gottschee and its
people through the centuries) -
it starts off like this:

"in the beginning there was the forest"
- that was around 1330.

and, ends like this:

"most of the former gottscheer settlements
were destroyed in the battles between the
yugoslavian partisans and the italian
occupation forces between 1941 and 1943.
the region that was built up and cultivated
by the gottscheers through centuries no
longer exists.

at the end, there is the forest".

that's over 600 years - wiped out.

my parents immigrated in the mid 1930's
but many - including family - were caught
up in the resettlements during WWII.
(man has not changed much has he - the
massacre continues. different locations,
different excuses but the same greed and
disregard for human life.)

thanks very much for your kind offer to
help in tracing my background. fortunately
i grew up with a strong sense of my heritage
and have been able to piece much of it
together.

i have occasionally asked a question about
gottschee on various sites in s.i. - your's
was the first positive response and i was so
pleased to receive it. thanks again.

rose
