Ice - It was your standard issue mountain lion (puma). The ranger shot and wounded it when it lept at him after a brief eyeball to eyeball face off which gave him a chance to draw his 9mm. The cat was tracked down and killd a short while later. The story was front page news in yesterday's Denver Post.

>> July 19 - GRAND LAKE - The mountain lion that killed 10-year-old Mark David
Miedema on a Rocky Mountain National Park trail Thursday later stalked and pounced
at a park ranger, who shot at the animal in self-defense.

"We looked eye to eye at one point," said seasonal park ranger Chris Philippi,
describing the chilling encounter. "She knew that I was there. She saw me, and she still
came up."

Although the 88-pound lion was tracked down and killed a few minutes later, its brazen
actions revealed a fearless attitude toward humans and - officials believe - portend future
violent encounters with animals as national parks become increasingly crowded. . . . <<
