Over the past couple of years I have learned a lot about apologies while engaging in these SI discussions. For that I feel I owe some thanks to bill clinton. When I goof these days I make mine as quik and painless as possible.

I now feel qualified to analyse and discuss the content, quality, and to some extent the sincerity of just about any apology. Another thing that has become apparent is that there seems to be a window of opportunity for apologies. For example after the blue dress was handed over, confessing that he had done more than minister to a troubled youth didn't mean much (depends on what the meaning of minister is, I guess).

So, I agree with you:

"Why not leave it at that instead of embarrassing yourself even more with these silly rationalizations?

In some ways it is a fascinating thing to observe, in others it is sad and frustrating.
