Thanks Carl.
You were on target as well!

I have to admit that I thought Bush "wanted" it to come out with a diplomatic solution. Apparently the Diplomatic solution happened despite all his efforts.

I sort-of-liked this post (I think it was what really happened):

Unbelievable Opportunity for Saddam
I wonder if Saddam sees the unbelievable opportunity he has right now. World opinion is lined up against dethroning him by a US preemptive strike.
George Bush has certainly brought us all together in an unprecedented way.(except for some of the esteemed posters on this thread!)
He truly is the most influential man on the planet.
THe list of supporters for W's regime change is very short and they are running out of sound bites and tap dances.

Follow this and help me find the flaws:
Saddam has been a pariah since the Gulf War and is hemmed in by sanctions and weekly bombings. Apparently his ability to get all his ducks in a row for Nukes is going slower then he would like.

His best strategy is to throw open his borders without restriction and let anyone and everyone in to check for WMD. (Of course if he has any he should get rid of them first).

Result, the entire world would experience a collective sigh of relief and he would get the credit for avoiding a world wide conflagration.

A case could be made for removing some of the sanctions and US/Brit bombings. He could get the award for "Most-Improved-Dictator-of-an-Oil-Rich-Country" and probably get better trade deals then he is getting now.

I wonder if he is too crazy to sieze the moment?
It would be quite a Coup! (No pun intended.)
